The instinct to tidy before a stranger sees the house is a strong one, and it is worth resisting here, because it costs you a weekend and changes our number by nothing. Dirty dishes, old furniture, a garage nobody has opened in years: none of it changes our number.

We are not evaluating housekeeping. We are evaluating a roof, a foundation, systems and structure, and none of that changes because the kitchen table is covered.

Especially with an inherited home
